About the Department
Year of establishment
The Department of Zoology was established in the year 2021 with the introduction of the B.Sc. (Hons.) Zoology programme. At present, the department offers both Undergraduate (B.Sc.) and Postgraduate (M.Sc.) programmes in Zoology. The department aims to develop academic excellence, research aptitude, and practical skills among students through modern teaching methods, laboratory training, and academic activities.
Vision
The department is dedicated to nurturing future zoologists, researchers, educators, and environmental professionals by providing a strong foundation in biological sciences and encouraging scientific inquiry and innovation.
Mission
- To facilitate students with knowledge of current advantages in zoology.
- To explore animal diversity in the locality.
- Conducting educational tour to give exposure to the students by visiting Scientific Institutes, Sericulture/Fisheries forms, Zoo, etc.
- To offer skill-based programmes/courses.
- To develop a research and scientific attitude among students.
- To equip students with adequate practical skills that will enable them to function productively in society.
- To make students aware of nature and appreciate it.
Specializations
Department of Zoology offers the course domain from the various specializations of Zoology, such as Diversity of Non-chordates & Chordates, Cell Biology, Animal Physiology, Biochemistry, Bioinstrumentation, Genetics, Evolutionary & Developmental Biology, Economic Zoology, Molecular Biology, Fish & Fisheries, Parasitology, Entomology, Endocrinology and Molecular Cancer Biology, etc.
Facilities
The Department of Zoology has a spacious Laboratory well equipped with various scientific Instruments, ventilated classrooms, a faculty room and, from the efforts of Faculty members, a small library and a mini museum having the specimens of various animals like Fishes, Amphibians, Reptiles, Mammals, & Insects and the herbarium of some common Medicinal Plants from the University and nearby places.
Lab/ Equipment
The Zoology Practical Laboratory is established on the 3rd Floor of the Academic Building. The laboratory is well-equipped with modern scientific instruments and facilities to support practical learning, laboratory experiments, and research activities. The laboratory houses a variety of scientific equipment, including Microscopes, pH Meter, Digital Colorimeter, Gel Documentation System (Gel Doc System), UV Trans-illuminator, Vortex Mixer, Microwave Oven, Haemocytometer, and Autoclave.
Student Activities and Clubs
One of the major visions of the Department of Zoology is to explore the animal diversity of the local region and promote the conservation of nature, natural resources, and wildlife. The faculty members and students regularly conduct and celebrate important events such as World Health Day, World Heart Day, Wildlife Conservation Week, Hornbill Conservation Day, Earth Day, and National Science Day. These programmes help create awareness about environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, public health, and scientific temperament among students and society.
Placement Highlights
Since the Department of Zoology has been offering the Undergraduate programme since 2021, only three batches of students have graduated so far. Despite being a newly established department, the students have shown commendable academic progress and have successfully secured admission to various prestigious institutions for higher studies. Several students have been admitted to renowned institutions such as the University of Lucknow and its affiliated colleges for postgraduate studies. Other students have also pursued M.Sc. and related programmes in different national-level institutions and universities across the country.
Achievements
Department of Zoology perform various best practices to achieve academic distinctiveness, such as:
- To induce scientific temperament among students, the Department of Zoology successfully performed various Educational Visits to Scientific Institutions in Lucknow and nearby places like CDRI, Regional Science City and Kukrail Reserve Forests, etc.
- Department Faculty and the students always actively participated in various Academic Events/ Conferences/ Activities in the Regional, National and International institutes via offline/online mode.
- The faculty and the students of zoology department performed field study and collected/preserved various food Fishes/ animals for the establishment of mini Zoological Museum in the Department of Zoology as well as Departmental Library.
